Air fryer onion bhajis are a delicious and healthier alternative to deep-fried bhajis. The air fryer allows you to achieve a crispy texture with less oil. Here’s a simple recipe to make air fryer onion bhajis:
Ingredients:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup chickpea flour (besan)
- 2 tablespoons rice flour (optional, for extra crispiness)
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to your spice preference)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- Salt to taste
- Water, as needed
- Cooking spray or oil for greasing the air fryer basket
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine chickpea flour, rice flour (if using), cumin seeds, coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
- Add thinly sliced onions to the flour mixture and toss until the onions are coated evenly. Gradually add water, a little at a time, and mix until you have a thick batter. The batter should be thick enough to hold its shape when dropped.
- Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for a few minutes.
- Lightly grease the air fryer basket with cooking spray or a small amount of oil to prevent sticking.
- Take spoonfuls of the onion batter and drop them into the air fryer basket. Flatten them slightly with the back of the spoon.
- Air fry the onion bhajis for about 10-12 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time, until they turn golden brown and crispy.
- Once cooked, remove the bhajis from the air fryer and let them cool slightly before serving.
- Serve the air fryer onion bhajis hot with your favorite chutney or dipping sauce.
