Air Fryer Steak

Air Fryer Steak

Natalie September 11, 2023

Air frying steak is a quick and convenient way to cook a delicious and juicy steak with a crispy exterior. Here’s a simple air fryer steak recipe along with some important notes:

Ingredients:

  • 2 boneless ribeye, sirloin, or New York strip steaks (about 1 inch thick)
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil or cooking spray
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Optional seasonings (garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, rosemary, thyme, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Your Air Fryer:
    • Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes. This will ensure the air fryer is hot and ready to cook your steak.
  2. Prepare the Steaks:
    • Pat the steaks dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps achieve a crispy exterior. If you have time, you can also season the steaks with your choice of seasonings. Salt and pepper are essential, but you can get creative with other seasonings as well.
  3. Oil the Steaks:
    • Lightly brush both sides of the steaks with olive oil or use cooking spray. This helps with browning and prevents sticking.
  4. Air Fry the Steaks:
    • Place the seasoned steaks in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Make sure there’s some space between them to allow for proper air circulation. If your air fryer is small, you may need to cook the steaks one at a time.
    • Cook the steaks at 400°F (200°C) for 8-12 minutes, flipping halfway through for even cooking. The exact time will depend on your air fryer’s wattage and the thickness of the steaks. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. For medium-rare, aim for 130-135°F (54-57°C), for medium, 140-145°F (60-63°C), and for medium-well, 150-155°F (66-68°C).
  5. Rest the Steaks:
    • Once the steaks reach your desired level of doneness, remove them from the air fryer and let them rest for about 5 minutes on a cutting board. This allows the juices to redistribute, ensuring a juicy steak.
  6. Slice and Serve:
    • After resting, slice the steaks against the grain for maximum tenderness. Serve immediately with your favorite sides.

Notes:

  • Steak Thickness: The cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your steaks. Thicker steaks will require more time in the air fryer.
  • Seasoning: You can get creative with seasonings. Besides salt and pepper, try adding garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, or your favorite steak rub for extra flavor.
  • Avoid Overcrowding: Make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket. If needed, cook the steaks in batches to ensure proper air circulation.
  • Use a Meat Thermometer: To achieve your desired level of doneness, it’s best to use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the steak.
  • Resting: Don’t skip the resting step. Letting the steak rest helps retain its juices, resulting in a more flavorful and tender steak.
  • Serving: You can serve your air-fried steak with a variety of sides like mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or a salad.

Air frying steak is a convenient and delicious method that yields a juicy and flavorful result. Experiment with different seasonings and steak cuts to find your favorite combination.

  1. Choose the Right Steak Cut:
    • While ribeye, sirloin, and New York strip steaks are popular choices for air frying, you can use other cuts as well. Keep in mind that leaner cuts like filet mignon may require slightly different cooking times to prevent overcooking.
  2. Room Temperature Steaks:
    • Before cooking, it’s a good practice to let your steaks come to room temperature for about 30 minutes. This helps them cook more evenly.
  3. Preheat for Best Results:
    • Preheating your air fryer is essential for achieving a crispy crust. If your air fryer doesn’t have a preheat function, you can simply set it to the desired temperature and allow it to run empty for a few minutes before adding the steaks.
  4. Don’t Overdo the Oil:
    • Use a minimal amount of oil to prevent the steaks from sticking to the air fryer basket. Too much oil can create excess smoke.
  5. Avoid Overcooking:
    • Keep a close eye on the cooking time, especially if it’s your first time air frying steak. It’s easier to cook it a little longer if needed, but you can’t undo overcooking.
  6. Resting Time:
    • The resting time is crucial to allow the juices to redistribute and for the steak to reach its final temperature. Don’t rush this step.
  7. Safety First:
    • When flipping the steaks, use tongs rather than piercing them with a fork. Piercing with a fork can cause the juices to escape, leading to a drier steak.
  8. Searing Option:
    • If you want an even more caramelized crust, you can sear the steaks for 1-2 minutes per side in a hot skillet with a bit of oil after air frying. This step is optional but can add extra flavor and texture.
  9. Experiment with Marinades:
    • Consider marinating your steaks for added flavor. Marinate them for at least 30 minutes to a few hours before air frying. Just be sure to pat them dry before cooking to ensure they get crispy.
  10. Safety Guidelines:
    • Always follow safety guidelines for your specific air fryer model. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for recommended temperatures and cooking times.

Remember that practice makes perfect when it comes to cooking steak in an air fryer. Once you get the hang of it and understand your specific appliance’s nuances, you’ll be able to consistently cook delicious steaks to your preferred level of doneness. Enjoy your air-fried steak!
